Mark Twain Union Elementary School opened in 1855, and serves the communities of Angels Camp, Altaville, Copperopolis (7th-8th) and Carson Hill. The school serves 580 students in grades kindergarten through eight, including special education classes. The school recognizes that each child is unique and gifted, that each child can succeed in a secure and caring environment.

Copperopolis Elementary School opened in 1865, and serves the community of Copperopolis, the Diamond XX area, and the areas in and around Lake Tulloch. The school serves 230 students in grades kindergarten through six.

Bret Harte High School opened in 1905, and serves the communities of Copperopolis, Altaville, Angels Camp, Carson Hill, Vallecito, Douglas Flat, Murphys, Hathaway Pines, Avery, Arnold, Blue Lake Springs, Dorrington, Camp Connell, and Bear Valley. The school serves 850 students in grades nine through twelve.

The school is a community focal point for students and their parents. Parents are active on committees such as curriculum, facilities, discipline, vocational education, agriculture, and accreditation. Bret Harte's strength as a learning institution is its cooperative effort with the staff and parent community in ensuring a safe and effective learning environment.

Bret Harte Union High School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Seventy-five percent (75%) of the class of 1997 went on to post secondary education with many of the remaining attending a technical school, working, or choosing military service.

This nationally normed test helps to monitor the learning progress of each student. Copper Cove High serves the communities which lie within the Bret Harte Union High School District (including Copperopolis). The school is one of five schools in the Bret Harte Union High School District, and opened in 1990.

Copper Cove High School is one of two satellite high schools (also called "small necessary high schools") operated by Bret Harte Union High School District. California rural school districts with an enrollment of less than 2,500 ADA (average daily attendance) are authorized to operate such schools.

Angels Creek Community School serves as an alternative school for students in grade six through ten who reside in the Bret Harte, Mark Twain, and Vallecito School Districts. Students attend Angels Creek Community School because for one reason or another they have not adapted to the regular school program.
